Just like you, we are also excited to play this year’s Holi with utmost zest and zeal. Though, it is important to know when is the right time to perform the Holi rituals and the things that one should avoid on this crucial occasion. Read on and learn every essential thing about Holi 2020 in order to have a memorable time with your friends and family.
Part 1. Holi Festival 2020 Muhurat: Ritual Timings
Performing the rituals for Holi is probably the most important thing that every religious individual should know. The Holika Dahan (also known as Holika Deepak) muhurat is on 9th March this year. The ideal time to do the rituals is from 06:16 pm to 8:47 pm IST. Ideally, the Purnima Tithi will commence from 08:57 am on 9th March and will end at 06:21 am on 2nd March. Therefore, you can perform the rituals during the entire duration. Though, for the best results, you should do the rituals during the sunset on 9th March, from 06:16 pm to 8:47 pm.
The next day, you can play Dhulandi (rangwali Holi) on anytime. It is mostly played before the sunset.
How to Perform 2020 Holi Rituals
On the eve of Holi, you can find Holika pyre on almost every street in India. Most of these pyres are located in parks, streets, community centres, etc. Though, if you can find a pyre at a crossroad, then it would be of a great significance. If you can’t find a pyre nearby, then you can make one on your own by collecting hay, wooden blocks, and other flammable materials. On the top of the pyre, place an effigy to symbolize Holika.
Now, during the designated ritual period, simply devote some sacred things like a piece of sweet, water, roli, and so on. Some people also place a few things from their past that they want to get rid of in the present. Once it is done, the pyre is burnt which signifies a cleansing process. Holi is related to fresh starts and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The bonfire is mostly followed by dancing, food, and celebrations.
Part 2. Holi Festival of Colours
On 10th March, 2020, Dhulandi would be celebrated. It is one of the most awaited days for many as it is spent with friends and family while having a memorable time. People meet each other and greet by playing with colours. Kids mostly use pichkari (water jets) and water balloons to prank others. For decades, organic and natural-based colours that are made from herbs and spices have been in use for Holi. Even though synthetic colours are also used these days, they are mostly frowned upon. Therefore, if you want to play a safe and healthy Holi, then try to use organic Holi colours as well.
The day of Dhulandi is usually spent while visiting friends and family and greeting each other. These days, people mostly collect in community centres and the main compound of societies to celebrate Holi. It includes natural drinks, delicious food, music, and lots of dancing.
Part 3. The Significance of Holi
Why is Holi celebrated? Holi is associated with the Hindu mythology of Prahlad and Holika. Prahlad, who was originally a devotee of Lord Vishnu, was exiled by King Hiranyakashyapu. The King asked Holika to burn Prahlad while sitting with him on a pyre of the bonfire. Holika was given a boon by Bhramha and could never be burnt. As she sat in the bonfire with Prahlad, he started praying to Lord Vishnu. To everyone’s surprise, God came to save him and left Holika in the pyre only to get burnt in the end. The Holi festival history signifies that we should not lose our faith, even in the toughest of times.
